What are list and segment limits?
To keep Klaviyo fast and reliable, there is a maximum number of lists and segments that can be created in each account. You may see warnings or be blocked from creating new lists or segments once your account reaches its limit.
For most accounts, the default limits are:
| Item | Limit |
| Total lists in an account | Up to 1,000 lists |
| Total active segments in an account | Up to 1,000 active segments |
| Starred segments | No separate cap (counted within the segment limit) |
| Inactive segments | No limit |
| Criteria (filters) per segment | Up to 100 criteria |
Some accounts may have different limits due to legacy configurations or approved overrides.
How can I tell when I’m approaching my limit?
When you are close to your limit:
- A counter appears on the Lists & segments page showing how many lists and segments you have, and how close you are to the cap.
When you reach your limit:
- If you try to create a new list or segment after you’ve reached the cap, you’ll see a warning explaining that your account has hit its limit.
- You will not be able to save or create additional lists or segments until you free up space or your limit is increased.
No existing lists or segments are automatically deleted as part of this enforcement.
Creating more lists or segments after reaching the cap
If you’ve reached your limit, you have two options:
- Free up space by deleting or archiving existing groups
- Review your Lists & segments page for lists or segments you no longer use.
- Delete or archive unneeded groups.
- After this cleanup, you can immediately create new lists or segments again (there may be a brief delay of a few seconds while counts update).
- Request a higher limit (for eligible use cases)
- If you have a legitimate business need for more lists or segments (for example, complex multi-region setups or large product catalogs), you can contact Klaviyo Support.
- In your request, include:
- Your account name or ID
- Why you need a higher limit and how you use lists/segments today
- How many additional lists or segments you’re requesting
Klaviyo will review and may approve a conditional increase based on your use case. Limits are raised in controlled increments to ensure performance and reliability for your account and the broader platform.
Best practices to stay within limits
- Consolidate similar segments instead of creating many near-duplicates.
- Use segment conditions (e.g., properties, engagement criteria) rather than separate lists when possible.
- Periodically review and clean up old, unused lists and segments.
- Use inactive segments to store definitions you don’t need to run actively, without counting against the active segment cap.
These practices help you stay within limits while keeping your account easier to manage and more performant over time.
